How to Take Control of Your Labor
While labor is very unpredictable, there are many things you can do to feel a sense of control over the process, including creating a birth plan, choosing certain members of your care team, and learning how to advocate for yourself while keeping everyone safe.
Remember – your care team works for YOU, and you have the right to accept or deny any intervention, treatment, or comfort measure. Here are some phrases and strategies to help you maintain control of your birth experience:
“I will not be doing [that intervention] unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.”
“Is this a medical emergency? If not, I am refusing [that intervention].”
“Please document that you are performing [that intervention] without my consent.”
Remind yourself: “My body, my birth, my choice.”
Arm yourself with knowledge about your body, about birth, about your care team, and about your birthing place.
Trust your gut – if something feels wrong, speak up.
